What Does TCLEOSE Certification Mean?

Texas law enforcement officials are required to be certified by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education. This means that not only have police officers in Texas completed the screening process to be considered eligible for acceptance into the police academies, but they have also been through the academies, graduated and are now taking continuing education credits that are TCLEOSE certification requirements.

Online Preparation For The Actual Examination

Once officers have gone through the courses required for certification, they can then go to the TCLEOSE website and take the practice test. This can be taken over and over until the officer is feeling quite certain that they will pass the genuine examination. The questions cover both civil and criminal law and what a peace officer is required to do in certain situations. For example, one question deals with violation of a restraining order and the officer's mandated response. 

Types of Courses

Courses that are offered to officers who are pursuing their continuing education credits for certification include such topic areas as Disaster Management, Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault Investigation, Emergency Response Management, Terrorism Awareness for Emergency First Responders. There are other courses that police officers are required by law to take, but those are not disclosed to the general public and the officer seeking TCLEOSE certification must log into the TCLEOSE website for that information.

Career Outlook

Police officers in every state many difficult challenges, and continually updating and improving an officer's training is essential in the current atmosphere of uncertainty, with the threat of terrorism looming over every citizen of the United States. Law enforcement is both a richly rewarding and incredibly stressful career, but it is one for which our police officers must be highly trained as possible. It is particularly interesting to note that TCLEOSE certification requires officers to take terrorism awareness courses.

Texas is one of only four states that share common border with Mexico; the others are Arizona, California, and New Mexico. It would seem logical that all four states should require the same. Texas certainly has the largest common border with Mexico of the four states, and it also is logical that officers are taught awareness so that they are alert to any possible threat of terrorism, were it to come from the south. Perhaps other states could take  note of the Texas law enforcement model as a benchmark for their own police forces. It is certainly worthwhile to properly train and equip our public safety personnel, both for their sake and ours.
