What Are The Requirements For Becoming A Police Officer?

Police departments are always on the lookout for applicants who fit a set of strict requirements for becoming a police officer. What are the requirements for becoming a police officer? Well, these vary from state to state and city to city, but there is a basic set of screening criteria for you to use as a guideline as you seek a career in law enforcement as a police officer. Requirements For Becoming a Police Officer

• High school diploma - this is a universal requirement.
• No criminal record - and this means no drugs, repeat no drugs!
• Physical fitness - you must be in top physical condition and you will be required to pass a test for fitness abilities.
• Mental fitness - applicants with a history of mental illness or depression are not eligible for hire. This is a very high stress job and mental stability is crucial.
• Must be a citizen of the United States
• Higher Education level - Associates or Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice
• Must be accepted to the police academy

If you meet the above requirements  for becoming a police officer, you will then undergo a rigorous process, which will include not only criminal and civil history checks, but a review of your military record, if applicable, as well as your driving record and credit history. Your spouse or significant other will be interviewed, as will your employer, coworkers and neighbors.

In addition to the above requirements, you will undergo a physical examination by a licensed physician who is approved by the police department to which you are applying. You will also be required to submit to a polygraph examination. Following satisfactory completion of the above requirements, including the police academy, you will be hired by the police department. You will have a probationary period, or what is also known as a rookie year, during which time you will be scrutinized for good job performance and fitness to be a police officer.

While the requirements for becoming a police officer are certainly quite strict, bear in mind that these are the people we trust with our very lives at times. There is a need for a high level of trust between the police and members of the public, and officers must be fit for their duties, both mentally and physically. Police officers are tasked with protecting and serving the public and this can be a very high stress career.
