How to Train to be a Cop

Step 1: Complete high school and take a series of recommended courses. It helps your application process if you have a background in business, accounting, math, behavioral sciences and computer skills. You should also take extensive physical education classes to keep yourself in top physical shape for the challenges ahead.

Step 2: Think about joining the military. Doing 1-2 years in a military program can prepare you well for the challenges ahead and will ease your application process.

Step 3: Pursue additional education by way of an associate's degree or bachelor's degree. It is not always required, but having a degree in a field like criminal justice is often recommended as they will prepare you with training in human behavior, legal issues and computer skills.

Step 4: Choose a department to apply to and pass the civil service exam. It will only be offered when the department has openings, but many departments offer them regularly to get new recruits. Step 6: Pass your physical exam. You need to be physically strong and so will undergo an evaluation based on your hearing, sight, strength and agility.

Step 7: Take additional testing like a lie detector test and drug test. Once working as a cop, there will be frequent drug tests.

Step 8: Take a personality test. This will be done in an interview format with a senior police officer, and it will analyse your personal traits, judgements, level of responsibility, dedication and integrity.

Step 9: If you pass all the exams, you will then be admitted to a cop training institute for 3 months to a year. It is also possible to attend police training courses before you apply at any specific police department if you are unsure where you want to work. You can then apply later once you are a fully trained cop.

Step 10. Take continuing education. You are expected to attend seminars or workshops every year in order to adapt to the environment you work in and cater to the changing needs of the community. You will also sharpen your skills, and get up to date on current legal procedures and policies you need to know about. Becoming a cop doesn't end when the training is over. It is a constant learning process that will keep you fresh and enable you to strive for advanced opportunities.
