Becoming A Police Officer - Cop And FBI Training And Requirements

Being a law enforcement officer is not an easy job, and it is not easy to become a police officer, either. Nor should it be easy - cops are tasked with keeping the peace and protecting the public. There are many steps to becoming a police officer, starting with a high school diploma. Most police departments, if not all, require that you complete high school and graduate with a diploma.

Probably one of the more important requirements to becoming a police officer is maintaining a drug free lifestyle. This means no cocaine, no marijuana - in short, no drug use of any sort whatsoever.

If you are overweight, prior to applying to any police academy, go on a diet and get into good physical condition. Every police department requires that all applicants be in good shape. Not only physical fitness is required however; mental fitness is essential as well.

Educational requirements are also critical in becoming a police officer. After achieving a high school diploma, you are advised to continue on to college. Police departments look for applicants who have completed an Associates or a Bachelors degree in criminal justice or pre-law.

If you have achieved the previous steps to becoming a police officer, you will then make application to the police academy for training. There is a rigorous screening process through which all applicants are required to pass. This screening includes a background check, as well as any criminal and civil history. If you were in the military, your record will be scrutinized as well. You will be required to submit to a drug screening and a physical examination, and you will be required to pass a polygraph examination.

The steps to becoming a police officer are lengthy and quite rigorous, and there is no guarantee that even after you have achieved a high level of education and are in good shape, that you will be accepted to the next level, which is the police academy.

If you are accepted to the police academy, which in most states is tied directly to the police department to which you made your initial application, your police officer training will include the criminal justice system, law, investigation methods, communications, defensive tactics, firearms training and police driving techniques.

Upon graduation from the police academy, you will then be hired by the police department and you will be a rookie officer. Congratulations and good luck!
